Property Defence Systems
At Vulcan, we understand the vulnerabilities that make properties susceptible to wildfire damage. Drawing on years of operational experience as wildfire practitioners, we design Property Defence Systems tailored to your unique risk profile.
Wildfires are a powerful force of nature – and one of their most dangerous features is burning embers. When carried ahead of the main fire by the wind, these embers can ignite ‘spot fires’ which spread rapidly. In extreme conditions, fire services can’t reach every property, making it vital to prevent ignitions in and around your home before the flames arrive.
We offer two main solutions:
- WASP Portable System – A quick-deploy option that connects to your municipal water supply and attaches to your gutters, creating a protective water curtain when a wildfire is approaching.
-
Rainstorm System – A permanent installation designed to saturate your entire property using a large, fixed water source (such as a swimming pool) and firefighting pumps.
Each system is custom-designed to suit your property and risk rating, helping you stay prepared and protected.

Property Defence System FAQs
What are property defence systems?
Property defence systems are measures designed to protect buildings and land from wildfire. They can include installed systems like pumps and piping that supply water to sprinkler heads, as well as landscape strategies such as fuel breaks, fuel reduction zones, and other methods to slow or stop the spread of fire across a property.
How much water do I need for a Sprinkler Defence System like the Rainstorm?
In order to properly protect your property, the system must saturate vegetation evenly over a wide enough area to protect your assets. Water should run continuously for at least 20-30 minutes to wet everything down, and ideally for up to an hour. The pumps we use can draw up to 1,000 litres per minute, which means you would need at least 30,000 litres, though 100,000 litres is preferable for full coverage.
Why can’t I use my garden taps, why do I need a pool or large water source for the Rainstorm system?
Systems like the Rainstorm require a large volume of water at a constant pressure to be effective. During a major wildfire, local fire services will use all available hydrants, which can cause water pressure to drop. By relying on your own pool or large water source, you ensure a steady supply and enough pressure to keep the sprinklers working continuously.
